Headsets

Headsets have a microphone attached making them a useful audio tool for schools and colleges. The headset’s microphone can be a boom microphone, where the microphone is on the end of a boom that can be moved into a position of choice for comfort. In-line microphones are attached to the cord that connects the headset to the device. These are commonly on in-ear headsets as opposed to over the ear headsets. Some headsets even have a removable microphone which can be useful if the microphone is only needed on occasion.

It’s not only the positioning of the microphone that differed across headsets, the type of connection connecting the headset to another device also differs. The type of connection required is dictated by what device is being used.

3.5mm headsets are connected to a device using the typical headset jack connection. Another name for this headset jack size is the miniature size or mini for short. Since most modern smartphones did away with the headset jack, these headsets are most suited to devices used in the music studios of schools and colleges or in to be used in music technology lessons and other lessons that use stereo and professional music equipment.

USB headsets are becoming more common with some modern smartphones requiring either a USB A or USB C headset connection. USB headsets often combine a microphone and a headset which is connected via a USB connector to a computer or other device. These headsets are also useful for teachers and school/college staff as they are commonly used for telephony via a computer. The computer can be turned into a fully-fledged telephone, with many useful functions. Subjects such as computer game design are a common use for this style of headset.

If a school or college has many devices requiring different headset types, it is sometimes easier and more budget friendly to purchase a headset type to suit the majority of devices and purchase a selection of headset and headset adaptors. Adaptors provide greater flexibility and students can use their preferred type of headset across many devices
